WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star Returns After a Decade: What It Means for Online Qualifiers

A Classic WPT Stop Comes Back From the Dead

After nearly a decade off the schedule, one of the World Poker Tour's most beloved stops is returning to the Bay Area. The WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star Championship returns to the World Poker Tour calendar for the first time since 2016, and the poker community has noticed.

The festival kicks off this month at Bay 101 Casino in San Jose, with the World Poker Tour® (WPT®) heading back to San Jose, California this fall as the WPT Bay 101 Shooting Star festival returns to Bay 101 Casino from Oct. 16 - Nov. 1. The headline event is the $5,300 buy-in Championship, which the 17-day festival will culminate with, running Oct. 23-27, with players competing for a place on the Mike Sexton WPT Champions Cup.

What made Bay 101 famous wasn't just the buy-in — it was the format. This year's Bay 101 Shooting Star Championship will follow the classic rules of the bounty format from previous years, where designated "Shooting Star" players carry a bounty worth $2,500 to whoever eliminates them. Hit one at your table and you've just turned a min-cash into a real score, independent of how deep you run.

Satellite Season Is Already Underway

For grinders who can't fly out for a $5,300 buy-in, the real story is the satellite path. In addition to the championship event, the festival schedule will feature a full slate of tournaments offering a wide range of buy-in levels and formats, and satellite opportunities will be available giving players a chance to earn a seat in the Championship event at a fraction of the buy-in.

Online, US-based players typically access WPT satellites through ClubWPT rather than WPT Global, since ClubWPT caters almost exclusively to those in North America, accepting members from over 40 individual US states, while WPT Global is not open to US players. If you've been grinding sit-and-gos or MTTs on ClubWPT or ClubWPT Gold specifically to build a bankroll for a live shot, this is exactly the kind of festival those qualifiers exist for.

What It Means for Players

A five-year gap is a long time in tournament poker, and it means the Bay 101 field this year will be a genuine mix: old-school regulars who remember the venue's reputation for deep, aggressive satellite action, plus a new generation who've only ever heard the stories. Historically, Bay 101's satellite program was considered one of the best in the country at feeding hundreds of players into the Main Event field — expect the online satellite volume on ClubWPT to reflect that same appetite this time around.

A few practical notes if you're chasing a seat:

  • Budget for variance, not just buy-ins. Satellite grinding is its own game — ICM-heavy, bubble-focused, and very different from regular MTT strategy. Treat your satellite bankroll as separate from your cash-game or regular tournament rolls.
  • The bounty format changes table dynamics. If you do make the live field, remember that Shooting Star bounties reward aggression against specific opponents — pay attention to who's carrying one before you decide whether a marginal spot is worth it.
  • Track your satellite ROI separately. It's easy to lose track of how many buy-ins you've actually burned chasing a seat across weeks of satellites. If you're playing your volume on ClubWPT Gold while building toward a live shot, running a ClubWPT Gold tracker alongside your sessions and importing hands into DriveHUD gives you a real number for satellite win rate instead of a gut feeling — useful before you decide whether to keep firing or cash out and buy in direct.

The bigger picture here is simple: live WPT festivals are a reminder that the online grind most of us do on apps like ClubWPT Gold and ClubGG isn't the end goal for everyone — for plenty of players it's the funnel toward exactly this kind of event. Whether Bay 101 lives up to its old reputation after the layoff remains to be seen, but the structure, the bounty format, and the satellite pipeline are all back in place for the first time in years.

If you're setting up tracking for the first time ahead of a satellite push, the guide walks through getting hand history flowing from either app into DriveHUD in a few minutes.
